» Optiphase and LxSix Team Up for Joint TDM Surveillance Demonstration

Van Nuys, CA - May 1, 2006 - Optiphase, Inc. announced today that it is teaming up with LxSix at the upcoming CLEO/PHAST Exhibit to demonstrate a distributed fiber optic surveillance system. The exhibit is being held May 23 to May 25, 2006 at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, CA.

The two companies will exhibit side-by-side in booths 1447 and 1449. Optiphase will demonstrate a multi-channel Interrogator integrated to an LxSix Fiber Sensor Array. The technology demonstration shows the capabilities of a highly sensitivity large area fiber optic surveillance solution. The companies have identified significant market interest in a cost-effective high performance perimeter intrusion solution for Homeland Security, particularly for securing large assets.

Optiphase’s multi-channel Time Division Multiplexed [TDM] Interferometric Interrogation System is designed to interrogate a remote “intrinsic” fiber optic sensor array. Individual sensors are formed by a series of contiguous fiber segments formed by Fiber Bragg Gratings [FBGs] at the segment interfaces, where the FBGs produce wavelength selective partial reflections. Interrogation is performed via transmission of modulated multi-wavelength optical pulses into the fiber sensor array and collecting the back-reflected [time separated] optical interference signals and processing them with Optiphase’s patented optical phase demodulation technology.

Unlike most current distributed surveillance systems, which employ either trip-wire or obtuse1 sensing methods, the Optiphase TDM interrogation method produces precisely measured signals which correspond directly to the forces imparted to the sensor caused by dynamic fluctuations. This type of sensing allows for highly reliable data processing to enable high probability of detection and very low false alarm rates.

The Optiphase interrogator supports fiber sensor arrays up to 25 km long. By attaching two fiber sensor arrays heading in opposite directions, the interrogator supports a total combined perimeter distance of up to 50 km. “We‘re targeting the TDM interrogator for large area asset protection and facilities with perimeter security needs. This solution is hidden, provides independent zone detection, is highly sensitive and cost effective for large area coverage” said Mike Weinstock, Optiphase’s Executive Vice President.

The LxSix Fiber Sensor Array embeds Fiber Bragg Grating partial reflectors in a splice-less array with an innovative automated process thus retaining the intrinsic properties of the optical fiber and the consistency needed for effective zone sensing. The automated manufacturing platform allows cost-effective embedding of a high channel count fiber array with a high degree of accuracy and consistency and is key to the survivability of a typical sensor’s 25-year life cycle.

“We are very pleased to be teaming with LxSix since it enables us to bring together two key technologies for an effective solution for the large area security market” said Jeff Bush, President of Optiphase.

Founded in 1990, Optiphase, Inc. is a leading developer and manufacturer of interferometric fiber optic sensor solutions for a wide range of applications including Biomedical, Industrial, Geophysical and Security industries. The company offers a complete line of fiber-optic Instruments and Assemblies for the scientific and technical community as well as sub-systems for major OEM partners.

LxSix Photonics is a privately held company leading the way in new photonic processes and manufacturing technology for advanced optical applications. LxSix Photonics designs and manufactures distributed, multi-function optical sensor solutions specifically for complex and harsh environments, specifically addressing the needs of the oil and gas industry.

1. A sensing approach where signals created in response to intrusion stimulus vary in a highly non-linear, or statistically variable (or both) manner.
